Jury Begins Deliberations in Trial of Teen Accused of Killing Nine-Year-Old Aria Thorpe

A jury has begun deliberating the fate of a 16-year-old boy charged with the murder of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who died from a fatal knife wound at her home in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, on December 15 last year.

The teenage boy, whose identity is protected due to his age, faces charges of murder and manslaughter. He denies intentionally causing Aria’s death.

During the trial, Mrs Justice O’Farrell reminded jurors of the gravity of the case. She emphasized the need for impartiality, stating, “This case involves the death of a young girl, Aria. It is tragic and deeply shocking, and while it evokes strong emotions, you must set aside empathy and judge the evidence fairly.”

The prosecution alleges that the boy deliberately stabbed Aria with the intent to kill or cause severe harm. Alternatively, they argue that his actions were reckless, creating a high risk of physical injury to Aria.

The defense maintains that the stabbing was accidental. According to the accused, he sought only to scare Aria, holding a kitchen knife and making a sudden movement toward her without intending to kill or cause serious injury.

The judge instructed the jury to strive for a unanimous verdict. Throughout the trial, evidence revealed that after the incident, the boy went to a nearby train station, openly admitting to a group of children that he had killed Aria by accident. Police were alerted by a child on a 999 emergency call and arrested the boy shortly after he boarded a train.

Home Office pathologist Dr. Amanda Jeffery testified that Aria died from a single stab wound to the chest and would have succumbed very quickly from her injury.

On the day of her death, Aria attended school and later took part in an after-school dance class. Her mother, Tori Hull, picked her up around 4:30 pm. They made mini-pizzas together before Ms. Hull left for an evening work shift, leaving Aria at home watching YouTube videos.

A family friend, Ollie Sheppard, returned to the house around 6 pm to find Aria critically injured on the living room floor. Emergency services were called immediately, but despite their efforts, Aria was pronounced dead at 6:58 pm.

The trial continues as the jury considers the evidence.
