Somerset batsman Josh Thomas is eager to build on a strong start to his professional career after signing a new contract with the county. The 21-year-old made a breakthrough at the end of last season and recently showcased his talent with a stunning 136 against Yorkshire in the County Championship at the County Ground. He followed that with a solid 57 in the second innings, although Somerset fell short by 75 runs.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Thomas as he inked his new deal. “Having played here for most of my life, Somerset truly feels like home. Whether it’s the dressing room, the field, or working alongside the coaches, everything about the club resonates with me.
“I didn’t expect the opportunity I got late last season, but I was pleased with my performances. Taking those chances has really set me up for this season.

“My focus now is to contribute to the team’s continued success. We’ve had an incredible run of trophies recently, and I want to help keep that momentum going. Staying in the first team for as long as possible is my goal, and hopefully, I’ll get a chance to feature in the Blast. I’ve worked hard over the winter, and it’s great to see that effort paying off.”
Thomas’s contract extension follows those of teammate Thomas Rew and experienced captain Tom Abell. Head coach Jason Kerr also recently secured a two-year deal, underscoring Somerset’s commitment to retaining key talent for the future.
Andy Hurry, Somerset’s Director of Cricket, praised Thomas’s growth: “Since his First XI debut, Josh has shown tremendous potential. His performances have been promising, and these experiences have helped him develop both on and off the pitch.
“We’re excited about this contract extension and the opportunity for Josh to continue influencing matches with both bat and ball. We look forward to supporting his journey with Somerset.”
Somerset will return to County Championship action this Friday, traveling to Glamorgan aiming to rebound from their recent defeat to Yorkshire. The squad continues to manage injuries with Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb), Tom Banton (finger), Lewis Goldsworthy (hamstring), and Thomas Rew all unavailable.
