Somerset batsman Josh Thomas is eager to build on an impressive beginning to his professional career after signing a new contract with the club. The 21-year-old made a striking breakthrough late last season and recently showcased his talent with a standout innings of 136 against Yorkshire at the County Ground. He followed this with a solid 57 in the second innings, although Somerset fell short as Yorkshire claimed a 75-run victory.
“I’m delighted,” Thomas said as his new deal was finalized. “I’ve spent pretty much my whole life here, so being part of Somerset feels like home. From the dressing room to the coaching staff, everything about the club is familiar and supportive.”
Reflecting on his rapid rise, Thomas added, “I was surprised to get the opportunity at the end of last season, but I’m pleased with how I performed. Taking that chance really set me up well for this year.”

Looking ahead, Thomas is focused on contributing consistently to a team known for recent successes. “I want to help Somerset win more trophies. Staying in the first team as long as possible is my goal, and I’m hoping to earn a spot in the Blast squad as well. I worked hard through the winter, and I’m glad it’s paying off.”
Thomas joins fellow young talent Thomas Rew and captain Tom Abell in committing their futures to Somerset, while head coach Jason Kerr also secured a two-year contract extension. This collective commitment underscores the club’s ambition to retain and develop their core group.
Director of cricket Andy Hurry praised Thomas’s progress: “Since his First XI debut, Josh has shown tremendous potential. His experiences have been valuable learning moments, and we’ve witnessed his growth both on and off the field. We’re excited about this contract extension and look forward to supporting him as he continues to make an impact with bat and ball.”
Somerset will return to County Championship action this Friday, traveling to Glamorgan, eager to recover from their recent defeat to Yorkshire. The squad remains without Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb), Tom Banton (finger), Lewis Goldsworthy (hamstring), and Thomas Rew.
