Jolly’s Reopening Postponed to 2027 as Extensive Restoration Begins

Jolly’s, the historic department store in Bath, will reopen later than initially scheduled. Originally set to welcome customers again in October 2026, the reopening has now been pushed back to March 2027 due to extensive restoration work.

With a history spanning over 200 years, Jolly’s is one of Europe’s oldest department stores. It closed its doors in February 2025, shortly before being acquired by department store chain Morleys, who have committed to reviving the cherished brand.

Ray Clacher, CEO of Morleys Stores, expressed the challenges and opportunities involved in the project: “Working within a series of interconnected buildings that have evolved over more than two and a half centuries has been both inspiring and incredibly complex. Every stage of the project has presented opportunities to protect and celebrate Jolly’s rich history while ensuring we create the very best department store possible for Bath’s residents and visitors.”

Clacher continued, “We understand the deep affection people have for Jolly’s. Our aim is not just to reopen but to establish a vibrant, welcoming destination that Bath can be proud of for many years to come.”

Local officials also praised the project. Councillor Mark Elliott, cabinet member for resources at Bath and North East Somerset Council, said, “Morleys’ ongoing investment in the city demonstrates strong confidence in Bath’s economy. Restoring such a complex building to its full potential requires vision and time. We eagerly anticipate welcoming Morleys’ new store early next year, which will be a fantastic addition to Milsom Street and the wider Milsom Quarter.”

Jolly’s origins trace back to the Georgian era, when Kentish native James Jolly opened a successful drapery shop in Deal. In 1823, he expanded to Bath, establishing the store that would become a local institution. In 1970, the business was acquired by E J Dingles and Co, which was later purchased by House of Fraser. After House of Fraser entered administration in 2018, the business was taken over by Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group.
