Join the Historic Tradition: Glastonbury Seeks New Town Crier

In the historic town of Glastonbury, the search is on for a new Town Crier. Volunteers with a strong voice and authoritative presence are invited to come forward and participate in this unique and iconic tradition.

If you have a passion for dressing up in period costume, roaring at people, and announcing public events, this may be the role for you. Not to mention the chance to carry a bell and a scroll.

David Greenway, who served as Glastonbury’s town crier for a decade, has recently stepped down, leaving the honorary position vacant. Apart from possessing a clear voice and charismatic presence, the chosen candidate will be expected to take part in ceremonial duties, promote local events, and engage with both residents and visitors.

The advertisement for the job on the town council’s Facebook page highlights the key responsibilities including announcing important local news and events, promoting and attending community celebrations, taking part in civic ceremonies, and upholding cherished traditions.

While some debate the relevance of the town crier, there are supporters who emphasize the role’s historical and communal significance. Councillor Jon Cousins and Councillor Lokabee Lokabandhu expressed their strong support for continuing the tradition, citing its vital role in connecting with the community and raising charitable funds, as well as its support of ceremonial events.

Despite the enthusiasm of some councillors, there are opposing views, with Councillor Lillith Osborn dismissing the position as a waste of time and others highlighting the importance of the town crier in maintaining the town’s historical roots and its impact on tourism.

The deadline to apply is April 7th, with interviews scheduled for April 14th at the Glastonbury Town Hall.

To apply, send a CV and covering letter to The Mayor of Glastonbury via post or email.
