Johann van Graan’s Strategic Masterclass Secures Bath Rugby Victory Over Sale Sharks

In a pulsating Gallagher Premiership clash at the CorpAcq Stadium, reigning champions Bath Rugby edged out Sale Sharks 31-26, securing a valuable bonus-point victory. Despite missing several key players, Bath’s tactical nous under head coach Johann van Graan proved decisive.

Sale Sharks, led by Alex Sanderson, showcased resilience with tries from Tom O’Flaherty, Rob du Preez, Luke Cowan-Dickie, and Tom Roebuck, all converted by George Ford. Their squad, although impacted by injuries to twins Tom and Ben Curry, featured experienced internationals like Bevan Rodd and Ford, who returned from the Six Nations.

Bath, however, demonstrated their squad depth and adaptability. Resting several stars ahead of a crucial Champions Cup fixture, van Graan entrusted a largely second-string squad, including five try-scorers: Dan Frost, Louie Hennessey, Ethan Staddon, Bernard van der Linde, and Alfie Barbeary. Santi Carreras contributed crucial conversions, guiding Bath to victory.

The match started with Bath asserting early dominance on a rain-soaked pitch, Frost opening the scoring with a close-range try converted by Carreras. Sale’s Joe Cokanasiga was sin-binned for deliberate knock-on, which shifted momentum momentarily. Sale responded with O’Flaherty finishing a delightful move and du Preez scoring after video review, placing Sale ahead.

Bath’s discipline wavered with Frost receiving a yellow card for repeated offside offences, yet the team continued to attack relentlessly. Cowan-Dickie’s powerful try extended Sale’s half-time lead to 19-7.

The second half saw a surge from Bath. Hennessey’s try from a line-out, followed by Staddon’s close-range score, leveled the game at 19-19. Despite a missed conversion, the back-and-forth contest thrilled fans. Ford’s precise kicking nudged Sale ahead again before Bath struck back through replacement hooker Kepu Tuipulotu’s impressive breakaway try and Carreras’s conversion made it 26-26.

In the dying minutes, Alfie Barbeary’s decisive try sealed Bath’s comeback. The win moves the champions to within a single point of league leaders Northampton, underlining van Graan’s perfect blend of rotation and resilience ahead of looming European challenges.
