Bath Rugby’s head of rugby Johann van Graan and star fly-half Finn Russell have both spoken highly of the positive influence their new attack coach, Mike Prendergast, is having on the team.
Amidst a season of stability both on and off the field, one of the most significant changes at Bath Rugby ahead of the 2026/27 Gallagher Premiership campaign has been the appointment of Prendergast as the new attack and backs coach, succeeding Martin Gleeson.
Prendergast arrived at Farleigh House already familiar with Russell, the club’s crucial playmaker. The two worked together at Racing 92 before Russell’s move to Munster, establishing a strong player-coach relationship.

Their partnership contributed to Racing 92’s run to the Investec Champions Cup final in 2020, where they narrowly lost to Exeter Chiefs.
Russell commented: “I had him at Racing so I know him from there. He is a brilliant coach, who drives standards and demands from his players, which is great.
“As players, we can hold each other accountable on the field, but having a coach provide direction and detail is different and really valuable.”
Since the departure of former attack coach Lee Blackett a year ago, Bath have struggled to maintain their attacking edge, leaning more heavily on a powerful pack. Van Graan recognises the need for a more balanced and versatile approach to return Bath to English rugby’s summit.
Speaking about Prendergast, van Graan said: “I am really excited about Mike. From when I first met him, I saw he was a calm, experienced coach with the ability to get the best out of players while understanding the demands of a season and the team’s identity.
“He has made a flying start here. His energy and desire to add to the club are clear.
“Mike brings a wealth of experience, having coached internationally, competed in the Champions Cup, coached in the URC, and won trophies with other teams.
“I look forward to seeing how he can help improve our team and, most importantly, strengthen our backs.”
