Bath Rugby’s head of rugby Johann van Graan and star fly-half Finn Russell have both expressed strong approval of the club’s new attack coach, Mike Prendergast.
The 2026/27 season brings notable change to the Gallagher Premiership side, with Prendergast replacing Martin Gleeson as the attack and backs coach. This appointment stands out at a club known for its stability both on and off the field.
Prendergast arrives at Farleigh House already familiar with key players, including playmaker Russell, with whom he previously worked at Racing 92 prior to Russell’s move to Munster. Their collaboration at Racing 92 was marked by success, most notably reaching the 2020 Investec Champions Cup final before being defeated by Exeter Chiefs.

Russell commented, “I had him at Racing, so I know him from there. He is a brilliant coach, one who will drive standards and demand a lot from his players, which I think is really good. As players, we can try to hold each other accountable, but having a coach doing it on the field adds a different level of direction and detail.”
Since the departure of Lee Blackett-who left for an England coaching role after a treble-winning season-the club’s attacking play has struggled to maintain its prior momentum. Van Graan’s team relied heavily on forward power, but to reclaim their place at the summit of English rugby, Bath must develop a more balanced and precise attacking approach.
Van Graan reflected on Prendergast’s influence: “I am really excited about Mike. When I met him several years ago, I saw a calm, experienced coach who strikes a good balance between getting the best out of players and understanding the demands of a season and the identity of our team. He’s made a flying start. I associate energy with him, and it’s clear he wants to contribute to the club’s success.
“Mike has coached at various clubs around the world, understands the Champions Cup, has coaching experience in England and the URC, and has already won a trophy with a different team. He is a very balanced and experienced coach. I look forward to seeing how he enhances the team and, most importantly, improves our backs.”
