Bath Rugby is set to make significant changes to their lineup for Saturday’s local derby against Bristol Bears at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Head coach Johann van Graan faces the challenge of managing a squad that has played more matches than any other English club this season.
With the Blue, Black and White already securing a home semi-final spot in the Gallagher Premiership, this weekend’s fixture holds less competitive weight for Bath. However, the pride and rivalry in the Bath-Bristol matchup remain fierce. Van Graan, known for his forward-thinking approach, is prioritizing upcoming knockout matches, especially after Bath’s 39-24 victory in Edinburgh propelled them to the EPCR Challenge Cup final.
Bath’s packed schedule—including winning the Premiership Rugby Cup final 48-14 at Exeter Chiefs and progressing deep into European competition—has resulted in them playing up to seven more games than other teams. Bristol Bears have played five more games than average due to additional exhibition matches. This taxing schedule forces van Graan to strike a balance between striving for success in every game and preserving player fitness.

In his Wednesday press conference, van Graan hinted at fielding a less experienced squad this weekend as Bristol seeks to halt a three-game losing streak, risking their fourth-place position and playoff chances.
Van Graan commented: “This weekend presents very different circumstances for both teams. It’s a home game for Bristol and an away game for us. We have secured the number one spot and a home semi-final in a few weeks. Bristol is in a different position and will manage their approach accordingly.
“In three weeks, we face our first European final together—an important milestone. We are united in our season objectives and will embrace Saturday’s game for what it is: a Premiership match at the Principality Stadium in front of 50,000 fans. Bath vs Bristol is always a special occasion, and we will enjoy it.”
He added: “This season has been relentless; we’re in week 43 with 11 consecutive games since winning the Premiership Cup. We’ve played seven more matches than other teams, which reflects our success but also means careful squad management.
“While other teams have had recent breaks, we haven’t had a day off. Our squad understands the rotation system; not every player can play every minute each game.
“We came through Saturday’s match without major injury concerns. Max Ojomoh remains unavailable, and we had a minor injury to one of our young players today, but I will provide further updates after the game.”
