A jogger narrowly avoided disaster at Portishead’s notorious mudflats just minutes before the incoming tide cut off their escape route, prompting a stark warning from the coastguard.
Portishead Coastguard described the area as “one of the most dangerous” along the Bristol Channel, highlighting the extreme height and speed of the tides as primary hazards. On Tuesday, July 14, the jogger ventured into the mudflats despite multiple warning signs, only returning safely to shore ten minutes before the tide surged in.
The coastguard emphasized that while the weather may be pleasant and the coastline inviting, the mudflats and banks around Portishead are highly perilous. They urged visitors to respect warning signs and avoid crossing beyond safe zones marked by pebbles.

“Thankfully, this individual realized the danger and turned back in time, preventing an emergency mud rescue operation,” the coastguard said. They advised anyone witnessing someone in distress to immediately call 999 and ask for the coastguard, stressing the importance of safety near tidal areas.
The incident serves as a critical reminder to enjoy coastal activities responsibly, recognizing the powerful natural forces at play in the region.
