Joe Gubbins ‘Settling In Really Well’ at Yeovil Town

Joe Gubbins, the latest addition to Yeovil Town, has shared his positive first impressions following the team’s return to pre-season training. Having joined from Southend United on a two-year contract, Gubbins brings valuable experience, including an FA Trophy win and a National League play-off appearance.

Speaking with BBC’s Jack Killah, Gubbins reflected on the early days at Yeovil: “It’s very hot. Not ideal for a ginger like me, but overall, really enjoyable. I’m settling in well and getting to know my way around. It’s been a great few days.”

With many new teammates also arriving this season, Gubbins acknowledges that bonding will take time but remains optimistic. “First impressions are great—everyone seems settled, and I believe it’s shaping up to be a positive season with the players the gaffer has brought in.”

Gubbins cited the influence of manager Billy Rowley as a major factor in his decision to join Yeovil. “Billy’s ambition really inspired me. The way he envisions taking the club forward and his style of play was very attractive. After just one conversation, I was convinced. I’m excited to work under him in the coming seasons.”

Reflecting on the transition from Southend United, Gubbins admits it was not an easy choice. “Leaving a place where I enjoyed both the group and the management was tough. But after speaking to Billy, the decision became clear. I’m confident I made the right move and I’m happy here now.”

At 24, Gubbins already boasts over 135 senior appearances, comfortably covering center-back and other defensive positions. When asked about his playing style, he said: “I like to see myself as a calming influence. I enjoy getting on the ball and dictating play from the back. Defensively, I’ve matured and really take pride in blocking shots and getting stuck in.”

He added, “Most importantly, I love playing football. That passion aligns perfectly with Billy’s vision. He wants a team that plays with the ball on the ground, and that suits how I’ve been brought up. Fans can expect me to give 100 percent every week and do my best for the club.”
