Ronnie Scott’s in London’s Soho is famed worldwide as a jazz mecca, but this June, Bath will proudly host one of its own jazz luminaries. James Pearson, celebrated pianist and artistic director, is set to perform a special one-off concert at The Pump Room as part of the Bath Festival.

Fresh from acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall in New York, Pearson brings his exceptional trio to share an evening of jazz that promises to captivate both aficionados and newcomers alike.

On June 2, the James Pearson Trio will embark on a musical journey through 125 years of jazz history. Between songs, Pearson will share stories and insights about the iconic singers, songwriters, and musicians who shaped the genre, enriching the experience with personal anecdotes and historical context.

Bath holds a special place in Pearson’s heart. Though he hasn’t performed in the city for 18 years, he has deep family ties to the area. His mother was born in Bath, and he spent many cherished holidays nearby in Englishcombe. The city played an influential role in igniting his passion for jazz—his first record, a Fats Waller album, was purchased in Bath’s Milsom Records in the 1970s, sparking the extraordinary talent that would follow.

“I’m incredibly excited to return to Bath,” Pearson shares. “It’s a beautiful city with a rich musical heritage, and performing at The Pump Room will be truly special.” His family’s legacy continues in the area, connected to the founding of Hilliers garden centre on Whiteway Road, and many relatives still call Bath home.

The concert begins at 9:30 pm on Tuesday, June 2, at The Pump Room. Alongside Pearson’s performance, The Pump Room will also feature other exquisite acts, including virtuoso accordionist Ryan Corbett and classical and jazz pianist Tom Poster, ensuring a magical, melody-filled season for Bath.

This June, Bath’s The Pump Room will be the place to experience the vibrant heart of jazz, as one of its finest talents returns to celebrate the music and memories that began his incredible journey.
