James Rew Shines as Somerset Secure Second Straight Win Over Warwickshire

Somerset have made an emphatic start to their Vitality Blast title defence, cruising to a seven-wicket win over Warwickshire Bears at Edgbaston, thanks to an outstanding innings from James Rew.

Chasing Warwickshire’s challenging total of 189 for six, Somerset reached 193 for three with ten balls to spare, maintaining their perfect record under coach Luke Gregory. Warwickshire’s innings featured notable contributions from Sam Hain (52 off 35 balls), Rob Yates (42 off 25), and Beau Webster (41 off 30), but they fell short against Somerset’s balanced attack.

After losing early wickets, Somerset’s chase was anchored by Tom Banton, who scored a quickfire 47 off 26 balls, setting a solid foundation. However, it was James Rew’s spectacular 93 off 48 balls, decorated with nine fours and four sixes, that stole the show and turned the match decisively in Somerset’s favour.

Warwickshire’s innings began with promise, but they lost Alex Davies early. The Bears’ powerplay was unusual, scoring 51 runs for the loss of one wicket in six overs, including a rapid 20 runs in one over off Jake Ball, who bowled with mixed fortunes. Ed Barnard’s explosive cameo of 28 runs in 11 balls kept the Bears competitive, but tight bowling from Somerset eventually curtailed their momentum.

Somerset’s innings saw a brief scare when Will Smeed fell early, and Tom Banton was run out in a rare mistake, but Rew took charge. His aggressive assault on spinners Usman Tariq and Tazeem Ali in the 14th and 15th overs, scoring a series of boundaries, propelled Somerset to a comfortable position. His innings, reaching fifty in 33 balls, showcased his talent and composure under pressure.

With Somerset cruising towards victory, Rew received a warm ovation from the home crowd, acknowledging the promise and skill he displayed on the field. His performance cements Somerset’s status as favourites in this year’s Blast, while Warwickshire faces an uphill battle in the group after two successive defeats despite their consistent quarter-final appearances in recent years.

Reflecting on his innings, Rew said, “We felt we were right in the game at halfway with our bowling. It was nice to find the middle of the bat and have some fun with white-ball cricket. Winning T20 games for Somerset, especially in front of big crowds, is really rewarding. I try to give myself time to settle, then capitalize towards the back end with our strong batting lineup. Today, we managed to score even faster than expected and finished with two overs to spare.”

Somerset’s strong start signals their intent to defend their title vigorously, while Warwickshire must regroup quickly to avoid slipping further behind in the fiercely competitive T20 Blast group stage.
