England’s cricket team is set for significant changes ahead of the second Rothesay Test against New Zealand, with debutants Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker confirmed to join the squad amid last-minute reshuffles. Adding to the excitement, Somerset’s James Rew may make his England debut if Jamie Smith’s partner delivers in the next few days.
The upheaval comes after captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were ruled out due to an unauthorized night out in London, while Ollie Robinson withdrew citing a knee injury. Kent’s Jordan Cox replaces Stokes at number seven, fresh off an impressive double century for Essex — his first County Championship innings in 11 months. Hampshire’s fast bowler Sonny Baker strengthens the bowling attack alongside the returning Jofra Archer, with spinner Shoaib Bashir making way after not bowling in the series opener.
Joe Root resumes his role as captain for the first time in over four years, and if Jamie Smith’s partner’s baby arrives imminently, Somerset’s James Rew could step in as wicketkeeper and bat at number six. This would mark England’s third debutant in the match, highlighting the unexpected challenges facing the squad at the Kia Oval.

Despite the sudden team changes just a week after a commanding 115-run win, head coach Brendon McCullum remains optimistic. “There’s been a few changes,” he admitted. “While there’s been a bit of chaos and it’s been difficult to navigate through the week, I look at that line-up we have this week and it’s super exciting. I’m quietly confident we’re going to see some exciting cricket.”
Sonny Baker, originally from Torquay, nearly earned his Test cap in the previous match at Lord’s but was ultimately left out. With tough white-ball outings last year behind him, he now has another chance to prove himself. McCullum praised Baker’s dynamic style: “If he gets some early wickets, I think the crowd and the country will really get behind him. He bowls with pace and swing, and his enthusiasm is infectious. We wish him well and may the cricketing gods shine on him.”
Jordan Cox’s journey to this opportunity wasn’t straightforward either. He missed a potential Test debut in December 2024 due to a fractured thumb during training. He has spent much of the season as a substitute for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in India but reclaimed attention with his impressive double century against Leicestershire. McCullum commented, “We wanted to see what he could do before thrusting him into that role, and his performance was a compelling case. His power and all-around game make him a good fit at number seven.”
Meanwhile, Jamie Smith missed training as he stayed with his family preparing for their second child’s arrival. Until then, James Rew remains ready as the backup wicketkeeper, ready to step up for England.
