Jacob Rees-Mogg Reflects on Mistakes Made During the Covid Pandemic

In an exclusive interview, Jacob Rees-Mogg shared his views on the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the numerous mistakes made during the crisis. Expressing his concerns, he discussed the challenges faced, the impact of pandemic rules, and the controversial Partygate events.

Rees-Mogg emphasized that the UK was ill-prepared for a pandemic and pointed out the limitations of the data collection system, which only provided information on weekdays. He recounted the discussions about setting up emergency morgues and the preparation for worst-case scenarios, while acknowledging that mistakes were made in the process.

Reflecting on his role in ensuring the enactment of necessary laws for dealing with the emergency, Rees-Mogg highlighted the administrative challenges faced in addressing the pandemic. He also mentioned the setting up of NHS Nightingale Hospitals across the UK, which were largely underutilized.

The former MP expressed regret for not advocating against subsequent lockdowns and discussed the initial reluctance to enforce strict measures, stating that the government seemed to have lost its nerve. He also addressed the misconception surrounding herd immunity and how decision-making was delegated to experts.

Regarding Partygate, Rees-Mogg defended the adherence to rules and regulations, stating that there were inconsistencies in the guidelines. He acknowledged the frustration caused by the enforcement of certain rules, which led to public disapproval of the government’s actions, including events at Downing Street.

Reflecting on personal experiences, he criticized the “completely stupid” rule of six, particularly in the context of having a large family and a private chapel. Rees-Mogg also discussed his participation in a reality TV program, his electoral defeat in 2024, and his considerations for the future.
