Tom Abell, Somerset’s dedicated captain and academy graduate, has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension through the 2028 season. A lifelong Somerset supporter and Taunton native, Abell has spent his entire professional career with the Cider Men, embodying the spirit and passion of the club.
Having made his First-Class debut against Warwickshire in 2014 with an impressive 95 runs, the 32-year-old has since become a cornerstone of Somerset cricket. Over 278 appearances across all formats, he has amassed over 11,700 runs, including 24 centuries, and has taken 62 wickets. Abell’s leadership was instrumental in Somerset’s Vitality Blast triumphs in 2023 and 2025, further cementing his pivotal role in the team’s success.
In 2017, Abell made history as the first former Somerset Academy player to be appointed club captain. Two years later, he led the side to their first trophy in 14 years, winning the Royal London One-Day Cup in a memorable final at Lord’s.

Upon signing his new contract, Abell expressed his pride and commitment: “I’m absolutely delighted. Somerset and this club mean the world to me and my family. I’ve only ever wanted to play for Somerset, and to extend my stay feels incredible. I want to be a one-club man and continue to help the club achieve success on and off the field.”
Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, praised Abell’s dedication and impact: “Tom represents everything Somerset stands for—passion, hard work, and loyalty. His relentless drive to improve and lead has made him one of the finest multi-format cricketers in the country and vital to our recent successes. We’re thrilled he has chosen to remain with us for years to come.”
