‘It’s Really Hard,’ Says Bath Big Issue Vendor Amidst Intense Heatwave

As the UK faces its third major heatwave of the summer, Ian Duff, a Big Issue vendor in Bath, is speaking out about the challenges of working outdoors in the soaring temperatures. Ian, who sells magazines on Union Street, shared, “This heatwave is really hard. I’m only able to work a couple of hours a day. It’s not as easy as people think.”

Bath’s temperatures are expected to peak at 32 degrees Celsius this Saturday, following two previous record-breaking heatwaves in May and June. Alarmingly, one scientific estimate suggests that 862 people in the UK have died due to heat-related causes this year.

Heatwaves pose significant risks for those working outdoors, vulnerable populations, and the homeless. Conditions like heatstroke, severe sunburn, and increased skin cancer risk are everyday dangers during the British summer—particularly exacerbated by climate change. Homeless individuals often find it difficult to access shade or air-conditioned spaces, while those living in vehicles face elevated heatstroke risks.

Outdoor workers are especially at risk. According to a government report published in April, these workers are 60% more likely to develop non-melanoma skin cancer compared to indoor workers.

To support their vendors, The Big Issue has partnered with DIC (Don’t Ignore Cancer) to provide Summer Support Kits. These kits include sun cream, a branded Big Issue cap, and an insulated reusable water bottle.

Ian stressed the importance of these items: “The suntan lotion is the best thing we can have because we can get very, very seriously burnt out here. The cap helps with visibility but also protects my head from burning. It’s good protection.”

Catherine Parsons, Managing Director of Big Issue, emphasized safety: “With record temperatures recorded in June and another heatwave underway, we’re encouraging our vendors to stay safe in the sun, stay hydrated, and take regular breaks. Providing sunscreen in our Summer Support Kits helps keep vendors safer while they earn a living. We’re grateful for DIC’s collaboration.”

Russ Oliver, founder of DIC, added: “We’re proud to support Big Issue by donating our sunscreen for the Summer Support Kits. According to APPG reports, outdoor workers face a much higher risk of skin cancer, and vendors spend long hours outside, putting them at risk all year round, especially during hot weather. We hope our contribution raises awareness that sun protection should be as routine as brushing your teeth.”

This upcoming heatwave is forecasted to last longer than previous ones but with slightly lower severity, reduced humidity, and cooler nights. Health authorities recommend wearing sun cream, carrying water, and avoiding direct sun exposure between 11am and 3pm.

Communities are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, especially older people, and assist with errands during peak heat hours.

If experiencing heat exhaustion and unable to manage it, call 111. For signs of heatstroke, dial 999 immediately.
