Ben Church has described his experience playing for Somerset in this summer’s Metro Bank One Day Cup as “amazing.” The 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman made his debut for Somerset this summer and has been involved in all five of the side’s matches to date, during which the team has secured two victories and faced three defeats.
With several key players such as Tom Banton, James Rew, Thomas Rew, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore participating in The Hundred, and wicketkeeper Finn Hill sidelined through injury, Somerset turned to their academy talent to fill the gloves in the 50-over competition. Church has stepped into the role admirably, taking seven catches and completing one stumping so far. With the bat, he has contributed 48 runs, boasting a top score of 20.
Reflecting on his summer with Somerset, Church told the club’s official website, “I’m so fortunate to have had the opportunity to play professional cricket for Somerset this summer. It’s been really good.”

He added, “When I found out I was in the squad, it was a bit of a surprise. I was aware that there’d be opportunities with players in The Hundred, but it was still an exciting moment.”
Church acknowledged the step up in competition levels, saying, “Playing in front of fans and managing the associated pressures is different, and the pace of the game is quicker. But I haven’t found it too big a step up – it’s mainly about handling the pressures of First XI cricket.”
“The role I’ve had in the Metro Bank games, coming in later to finish innings, isn’t something I’ve done much before, so as a relatively inexperienced batter it’s been a challenge and a cool experience.”
On his wicketkeeping performance, Church commented, “I haven’t dropped many catches or missed many stumpings, which I’m pleased with. I just aim to be as tidy as possible. I even got a stumping, which was nice. I hope to get a few more in the matches ahead.”
Church concluded, “I’m definitely enjoying myself. Having the chance to play professional cricket for Somerset is an incredible experience.”
Somerset’s next fixture is a crucial home match against Surrey at the County Ground, starting at 2pm on Friday. The team must secure victory to keep their hopes of advancing alive, with three consecutive wins guaranteeing progression.
Ahead of the match, Somerset Head Coach Jason Kerr remarked, “We find ourselves in a position similar to the T20 Blast, needing three straight wins to have a chance at progressing. We have played some really good cricket so far, but the last game at Leicestershire was disappointing, especially in the second half.”
He urged his players to “put in a significantly better performance and replicate the strong cricket we’ve played at home this competition.”
Kerr added, “Surrey have also lost players to The Hundred but retain several internationals and remain a strong side. We must be at our best to earn the points.”
“There is considerable talent in our squad. While some players are inexperienced, others bring great experience. We need to combine these strengths. Our bowling has been impressive, and until the last game, batting was solid. We need to keep the belief and deliver consistent performances in the days ahead.”
