Independent shops and businesses along Hill Road in Clevedon have expressed their relief and delight after North Somerset Council decided to drop plans for on-street parking charges in the area. The move follows a year-long campaign led by local traders who feared that new fees would harm their businesses and reduce customer access.
Sandy Prater of Fizz Gallery described the moment the news broke as a collective sigh of relief among the community. “My phone didn’t stop pinging with messages of celebration from businesses who had been anxious about what the charges would mean for their future,” she said. “I’m thrilled the council listened to our concerns and made a sensible decision. This is truly a win for Clevedon and its community.”
David Sims from Books on the Hill echoed this sentiment, highlighting the unique charm of Hill Road, Alexandra Road, and Bellevue Road—collectively known as “the HAB.” This commercial area, distinct from Clevedon’s main town centre and closer to the seafront, is home to many independent retailers who worry that parking fees would dampen the vibrant local economy.

Local councillor Michael Pryke, a vocal opponent of the charges, celebrated the U-turn. “Together with residents and traders, we’ve consistently opposed these charges as unfair and damaging,” he said. “This reversal is fantastic news for Clevedon’s small businesses and a clear vote against punitive policies.”
The decision by North Somerset Council comes amid controversy, with Clevedon Town Council having initiated legal steps to challenge the charges. While it remains unclear how much influence this had, the council’s announcement cited the lack of nearby off-street parking as a key factor for excluding the HAB area from the new fees.
Council cabinet member Mark Canniford stated, “We are committed to a balanced, sustainable approach that supports residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Given the economic challenges we face, maintaining easy access to these unique shopping areas is vital for local growth.”
While Hill Road, Alexandra Road, Bellevue Road, and Gardens Road have been exempted, on-street parking charges will still proceed on Elton Road and Old Church Road—popular parking areas near Salthouse Fields and Marine Lake. Additionally, charges for council car parks are set to come into effect this summer.
Overall, the decision marks a significant victory for Clevedon’s independent retailers and reinforces the community’s influence in shaping local policies that impact their livelihoods.
