Investigation Updates After Three Deaths at Swanage Care Home

Dorset Police have provided an update on the investigation into the deaths of three residents at Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage. While one death is suspected to be unnatural, authorities have found no evidence of third-party involvement or environmental hazards, including carbon monoxide poisoning.

On October 23, 2024, the bodies of a 91-year-old man, a 74-year-old man, and an 86-year-old woman were discovered at the care home. An inquest will be held concerning the 91-year-old man’s death, while the other two residents were determined to have died of natural causes.

The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) launched a multi-agency inquiry following the unusual circumstances. Initially, a 60-year-old local woman was arrested as part of the probe but was later released without charge, with police emphasizing this action was to ensure a thorough investigation and legal safeguards.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third, leading the investigation, stated, “We have conducted a range of complex inquiries in collaboration with partner agencies and HM Coroner to fully understand the circumstances surrounding these deaths.” He confirmed that examinations ruled out any carbon monoxide leaks or other environmental factors at the care home.

Throughout the investigation, police have maintained close communication with the families affected and expressed gratitude for their cooperation. Community support in Swanage has also been acknowledged as vital during this difficult period.

Following the incident, seven residents were hospitalized as a precaution, and others were temporarily relocated until it was safe for them to return. DCI Third emphasized the importance of transparency while cautioning against premature conclusions before all evidence was fully reviewed.

This ongoing investigation reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of care home residents and the wider community.
