Investigation into Alleged Homophobic Abuse on Football Pitch Concludes Without Disciplinary Action

An investigation by Somerset Football Association (Somerset FA) into claims of homophobic abuse during a football match has concluded with no disciplinary action, as the allegations were found to be “not proven.”

The controversy arose in September during a Somerset County League Division 3 fixture between Chew Magna FC and Axbridge United FC. The match was abandoned at half-time after a Chew Magna player reportedly became the target of a homophobic slur. In response, the Chew Magna team collectively decided to leave the pitch, emphasizing their zero tolerance for any form of abuse in football.

The incident took place at Chew Magna’s home ground near Clutton and was promptly referred to Somerset FA for thorough investigation. Following a detailed review, which included witness statements and evidence presented during a hearing, the independent panel appointed by Somerset FA ultimately determined that the charges against the Axbridge United captain were “not proven” on the balance of probabilities.

Axbridge United FC issued a statement expressing their full cooperation during the investigation and welcoming the FA’s conclusion that no inappropriate language or behavior occurred from their players. The club reaffirmed its commitment to respecting inclusivity, fair play, and the fight against discrimination both on and off the field, stating they consider the matter closed.

Somerset FA clarified that their finding did not conclusively establish whether or not a comment was made, but based on available evidence, disciplinary measures would not proceed. Chew Magna FC has yet to provide a public response.
