International cricket headlines Taunton as England and India clash in Women’s IT20 decider

International cricket returns to Taunton on Tuesday, June 2, as the Cooper Associates County Ground hosts a nail-biting Women’s IT20 decider between England and India. The series, currently tied at 1-1, promises a captivating winner-takes-all showdown.

The English squad features Somerset’s own Heather Knight and Charlie Dean, alongside key players like Sophie Ecclestone and former Western Storm stars Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma. With over 5,400 tickets already sold, the atmosphere at Taunton is set to be electric.

Stand-in England captain Charlie Dean hinted at a strategic change for the decider, suggesting that rising star Freya Kemp could move up the batting order. Kemp was instrumental in England’s recent 26-run victory over India in Bristol, delivering a dazzling unbeaten 39 off just 13 balls and following it up with a vital two-wicket haul. Her explosive performance helped England post a competitive 168 for five, before restricting India to 142 for nine.

Kemp, 21, has batted lower down the order throughout the series but has impressed everyone with her dynamic batting style. Dean commented, “Freya was exceptional. She really took the momentum into our bowling innings. For her to go out like that, especially with questions about our power hitting, was brilliant. She’s versatile, and giving her more time at the crease could be a game-changer.”

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged Kemp’s match-winning contribution. “She took the game away from us with her batting in the final overs, and credit must be given to her,” Kaur said. She also reflected on India’s tactical gamble to retire Yastika Bhatia after a 33-run innings off 36 balls to bring in Jemimah Rodrigues, which ultimately didn’t pay off as Rodrigues was dismissed quickly by Kemp.

With both teams vying for the series trophy, Tuesday’s match in Taunton promises drama, skill, and an unforgettable cricketing spectacle.
