Nestled in the village of Huish Episcopi, the Rose & Crown is a pub steeped in history and tradition. Established in 1640, it has been lovingly managed by the same family for over 150 years, spanning five generations. This deep-rooted legacy has made the Rose & Crown a beloved hub of community spirit and local culture.
Annalee, a current team member, shares, “Our great-great-grandfather was the licensee back in 1871, and family involvement goes even further back. The pub has truly been a family affair, passed from mother to daughter for generations.”
Remarkably, the pub has retained its original flagstone tap room instead of a modern bar, preserving its historic character. Far more than a traditional pub, the Rose & Crown boasts a vibrant calendar of events, including beer yoga, friendly cricket matches, board game nights, live music, and their famous Classic Car Meet and Wednesday Wheels gatherings. These activities draw a lively crowd, making it one of Somerset’s most unique and welcoming social spots.

The pub features guest real ales from local breweries such as Bristol Beer Factory, Hop Back, and Glastonbury Ales, alongside a wide selection of local ciders like Burrow Hill and Sheppy’s. Complementing the drinks menu, diverse food trucks offer global cuisines ranging from classic fish and chips and burgers to Thai, Caribbean, Greek, Mexican, Malaysian, and Indian dishes, catering to every palate.
Known affectionately as Eli’s—named after their great-grandfather and former landlord—the Rose & Crown is run today by siblings and their partners, who took over management in July 2022. The backdrop is a tight-knit community, where multi-generational families regularly gather to enjoy the large beer garden and lively social atmosphere.
Recently nominated for the Somerset Live Pub of the Year Award and dubbed England’s quirkiest “Instagrammable” pub, the Rose & Crown continues to thrive as a cultural cornerstone. Pubs like this play an essential role in British life, especially in rural areas, bringing communities together to celebrate tradition, forge friendships, and create lasting memories.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday during the summer months, the Rose & Crown welcomes you to experience its historic charm, dynamic events, and warm family hospitality.
