Meeting up with my childhood best friend in Bath meant navigating the tricky terrain of dining options, as she’s been vegan for years. A steakhouse was off the table, fish and chips felt outdated, and KFC was a no-go. Luckily, Bath boasts a hidden gem: Plant. Eat. Licious — or PAL — an underground vegan eatery nestled in the basement of the Chapel Arts Centre.
But don’t let its subterranean location fool you. Descending the stairs, you step into a lush, green retreat that’s anything but gloomy. PAL’s interior bursts with hanging plants, mint-green walls, and an entire wall covered in vibrant synthetic grass, creating a welcoming atmosphere that’s as refreshing as its menu.
Functioning as both a café and restaurant, PAL offers a variety of options throughout the day—from fluffy pancakes in the morning to pre-booked afternoon teas and even a cheeky glass of wine in the evening.

As a food critic, I’m not here to debate the ethics or environmental aspects of veganism—I go to cafés for good food and great company. And PAL delivers on both fronts.
I started with a flat white made with almond milk (£3.50). The almond milk added a sweet, nutty twist to the coffee, elevating a simple classic into something special.
For lunch, I tried the ‘lamb’ Kofka served with pitta bread, golden fries, a fresh salad, and vegan tzatziki (£13.95). To my surprise, the meat-free lamb meatballs were incredibly close to their traditional counterparts in flavor and texture. A subtle mushroom undertone was the only hint that these meatballs weren’t the real thing—yet they were just as succulent and satisfying.
The pitta was perfect, and the vegan tzatziki, made without dairy, was indistinguishable in taste and creaminess from the original.
What stands out about PAL’s menu is its inclusivity—it’s crafted not just for vegans but for anyone looking to enjoy a hearty, delicious meal. Every dish is naturally free from lactose, eggs, and seafood, making it a safe space for those with allergies. Additionally, this plant-based approach aligns well with Halal and Kosher dietary practices.
While no eatery can cater perfectly to everyone, PAL comes impressively close—especially here in Bath. You don’t have to be vegan to appreciate what this place offers. All you need is an open mind and a hunger for good food.
Plant. Eat. Licious. welcomes visitors seven days a week, offering a unique and tasty experience beneath the streets of Bath.
