Innovative Bike Bus Boosts Safety and Community Spirit at Bathampton Primary School

Bathampton Primary School has introduced an innovative “Bike Bus” initiative that is quickly gaining popularity among families, with participation steadily increasing since its launch in September. This marks the first bike bus program in Bath and North East Somerset, inspired by successful models in Bristol and other cities where bike buses have become a valued part of daily school routines.

The project is spearheaded by local parents Jo Mouton and Saskia Heijltjes, the latter also serving as a Green Party councillor for Lambridge ward. Every Friday morning, they lead groups of children and parents along a safe, predetermined route to school, picking up additional families along the way. This collective journey not only boosts safety but also fosters a greener, more enjoyable start to the day.

The official launch on October 10 was a festive occasion, featuring flags, bubbles, and music that highlighted the joy of cycling together and the strong community spirit developing around the school run.

Pete Dyson, Bath’s Bicycle Mayor, praised the initiative, stating: “Bike Buses are a smart and simple way to build confidence, reduce local traffic and make streets friendlier for everyone. They provide families with flexible, sustainable commuting options. To complement this, more school streets are needed to ensure children can cycle and walk safely without the dangers of car congestion.”

Jo Mouton reflects on the positive impact: “It’s been wonderful to see the children grow more confident each week. Riding as a group creates a safe environment, and parents enjoy connecting before the school day begins.”

Councillor Saskia Heijltjes adds: “As a mother, it’s heartwarming to see the children setting off with big smiles. From a council perspective, initiatives like this are vital to reducing traffic and pollution near schools. The Bike Bus is enhancing both safety and joy on the school run and demonstrates what’s possible when families unite. We also need more school streets to guarantee every child a safe, happy journey to school.”

Bathampton Primary’s picturesque location, with accessible routes via village roads and a canal towpath, supports this active travel enthusiasm. The school has long promoted walking, wheeling, and cycling, providing secure, undercover cycle parking for pupils and staff.

The Bike Bus is supported by FRideDays, a program funded by Schwalbe Tyres UK and delivered by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, a charity dedicated to promoting sustainable school travel across the UK.

This initiative aligns with the 2024 BANES Children and Young People Health & Wellbeing Survey, which revealed that while only 7% of primary pupils currently cycle or scooter to school, an encouraging 37% expressed interest in these active travel options.
