Bath Rugby’s head of rugby, Johann van Graan, remains confident that No. 8 Jaco Coetzee will stage a strong comeback following his second ACL injury. The South African back rower, who joined Bath in 2021 from the Stormers, has been sidelined for the entire 2025/26 season after suffering a knee injury during a pre-season match against Munster last September.
Since his arrival at Bath, the 30-year-old Coetzee has struggled with injury setbacks, playing only 59 games and enduring serious injuries including two ACL tears on opposite knees, an ankle injury, and multiple concussions. Despite these challenges, van Graan emphasized Coetzee’s resilience and the vital role he plays in the squad.
“With his natural physicality and ball-carrying prowess, Jaco is one of the league’s top carriers,” van Graan said. “He played a very specific role wearing the No. 23 jersey, and he remains an integral part of our plans with two years left on his contract.”

During Coetzee’s absence, Bath has rotated several players in the back row, including Alfie Barbeary (now at Saracens), Dan du Preez from Sale Sharks, Miles Reid, and Arthur Green. Van Graan highlighted the competition for the No. 8 position but is optimistic about Coetzee’s return.
Drawing on his experience with players recovering from ACL injuries, van Graan cited examples like RG Snyman, Arno Botha, and Duane Vermeulen—Springboks who overcame similar challenges to win World Cups.
“Of course, there is always risk with injuries like these," van Graan noted. “But we believe in Jaco’s ability to come back stronger and contribute significantly next season.”
Coetzee’s determination and the club’s support suggest he has the opportunity to reinvigorate his career and bring his trademark aggression and impact back to the Bath pack.
