Bath Rugby head of rugby Johann van Graan has expressed his confidence in number eight Jaco Coetzee’s comeback following a challenging period marked by multiple injuries. The South African backrower, who joined Bath in 2021 from the Stormers, missed the entire 2025/26 season due to a knee injury sustained in a pre-season match against Munster.
Coetzee, 30, has faced setbacks with two ACL tears—one in each knee—since arriving at Bath, alongside other injuries including a serious ankle issue and concussions. Despite these hurdles, van Graan remains optimistic, drawing parallels with Springboks legends who have returned to top form after similar knee injuries.
During an interview with SomersetLive near the end of the season, van Graan said, “Jaco is on his recovery road. Similar to Will Stuart’s Achilles comeback, he will be available next season. We’ll see him back in the blue, black, and white at the start of next season.”

He added, “Jaco is one of the best ball carriers in the league and has played a crucial role in the number 8 jersey. He’s secured on a two-year contract, and we fully support him as he works to re-establish himself in the squad.”
Van Graan also referenced other players who overcame similar injuries, such as RG Snyman, Arno Botha, and Duane Vermeulen, all of whom returned to win World Cups despite suffering multiple ACL injuries. “There is always a risk with injuries, but it’s part of the game,” he stated.
During Coetzee’s absence, Bath relied on players like Alfie Barbeary, Dan du Preez, Miles Reid, and Arthur Green to fill the gap at number eight. With du Preez joining from Sale Sharks this summer, Bath will have strong competition for the back row as Coetzee prepares to make his impactful return.
The road to recovery may have been long and tough for Coetzee, but with his resilience and the club’s full support, Bath fans can look forward to seeing their dynamic wrecking ball back on the pitch next season.
