Industrial Unit Destroyed in Highbridge Blaze

A major fire severely damaged three industrial units at a commercial building in Highbridge, Somerset, early Monday morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded to multiple 999 calls reporting the blaze at around 8:53 AM on May 18. Upon arrival at the site in Burnham Without, crews found the building fully engulfed in flames.

Initial response included three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform. Due to the severity of the fire, five additional fire engines and a command support unit were deployed. Fire teams from Taunton, Bridgwater, Burnham-On-Sea, Glastonbury, Street, Cheddar, Martock, and Weston-Super-Mare all assisted in tackling the blaze.

The structure housed eight industrial units, according to the fire service. One unit was completely destroyed by the flames, while two adjoining units suffered approximately 50% damage from smoke.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 12:26 PM, using foam jets, attack jets, safety jets, and hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation by the authorities.

A spokesperson from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service stated, “Our crews responded promptly to multiple emergency calls. The fire had extensively damaged one unit and caused significant smoke damage to two others. We are continuing to investigate the origin of the blaze.”
