Residents and visitors walking and cycling between two bustling Somerset towns can now enjoy an enhanced journey following a significant upgrade to a local cycle route. Known as the Frome’s Missing Links project, the initiative has successfully delivered a new multi-user path from Welshmill Lane to the Colliers Way cycle path in Great Elm, creating an uninterrupted route between Frome and Radstock.
Phase two of the project, extending from the Colliers Way terminus to Elliots Lane in Hapsford, was recently revamped with a smooth Tarmac surface, making it accessible for various users including pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, and wheelchair users. The section, stretching approximately 1.3 kilometers, offers convenient access from various points, further connecting individuals to Route 24 of the National Cycle Network.
The section’s reopening was marked by a well-attended ceremony, affirming the community’s support for the project. Reflecting on the arduous journey, Richard Ackroyd, Frome’s Missing Links chairman, expressed gratitude towards the volunteers and the local community for their unwavering dedication.

The project not only focuses on improving the infrastructure but also draws attention to preserving the area’s heritage by incorporating elements such as railway sleepers and benches along the route. Furthermore, the recent upgrade with smooth Tarmac aims to make the route more inclusive and navigable for individuals with varying abilities, promoting safety and well-being.
The successful crowdfunding campaign, raising over £27,000, has provided the charity with essential funds to progress with the remaining ‘missing links’ in the region, demonstrating a collective effort to further enhance the local infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the group aims to address the two remaining ‘missing links,’ emphasizing the significance of safety and accessibility for all. Additionally, the completion of the wider Somerset Circle project, forming a 76-mile traffic-free circuit, remains a key objective, furthering the vision of seamless travel connections within the region.
