The ambitious £4 billion gigafactory in Somerset is rapidly taking shape, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) battery production capacity. Set to become the country’s largest EV battery plant, the facility is expected to manufacture batteries for up to 500,000 vehicles each year.
Located within the Gravity Enterprise Zone, between Puriton and Woolavington, the plant is being developed by Agratas, the global battery division of the Tata Group. This major project promises to enhance the UK’s green energy infrastructure and support the transition to electric transportation.
Supporting the construction efforts, plans for a new M5 junction have been announced to improve access to the site and accommodate future traffic needs.

Scheduled to be fully operational by 2027, the gigafactory will initially supply batteries to Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), both subsidiaries of the Tata Group.
Photographer Robin Morrison captured striking images of the site at sunrise, showcasing the newly erected steel framework of Building 1. Despite a sudden rain shower rolling through the area, the photographs vividly document the factory’s rapid progress and the dynamic environment surrounding the construction.
