Construction has officially begun on a new battery energy storage facility located near the Hinkley Point C park and ride site, marking a significant step forward in Somerset’s green energy ambitions.
Battery energy storage systems play a crucial role in balancing electricity supply and demand. They store excess power from the National Grid during periods of low demand and release it back when demand spikes, ensuring a stable and efficient energy supply.
Conrad Energy, based in Abingdon, received planning approval from West Somerset Council in February 2023 to build the facility on Smithyard Lane, just west of Williton and a short distance from the park and ride on B3190 Washford Hill.
More than four years after securing permission, Conrad Energy has now broken ground at the site near an existing gas distribution station and Outmoor Wood. The facility is expected to be operational by summer 2027.
With a capacity of 15MW, the new storage unit will be capable of powering up to 9,000 local homes, providing vital grid stability. This development supports Somerset Council’s ambitious goal of making Somerset a carbon-neutral county by 2030.
Mike Denman, senior project manager at Conrad Energy, stated: “We are excited to commence work on this key project. Battery storage is essential for the energy transition, helping to balance supply when renewables like solar and wind aren’t generating, and preventing energy waste during low demand periods. We look forward to bringing this facility online by the end of 2027.”
This new installation complements several other battery storage projects underway across Somerset, aimed either at supporting renewable energy adoption or providing grid capacity for growing housing and employment needs.
For example, Huntley Wood Investments Ltd. received outline permission in October 2021 for a similar facility on the former Wansborough Paper Mill site in Watchet. Additionally, a battery storage system is planned as part of a new solar farm north of Tropiquaria Zoo near Washford, approved on appeal in May 2024.
Together, these projects represent a significant commitment to expanding green infrastructure and enhancing energy resilience throughout the region.
