I’m from France but now live in Taunton – here’s why this Somerset town is so special

Stéphane Jouin, originally from Saint-Nazaire in France’s Loire-Atlantique region, has made Taunton, Somerset his home for the past four years. Moving to the UK nine years ago for a role in the energy sector, Stéphane has since embraced British life and documented his experiences through his popular YouTube channel, ‘A French guy in England’.

His channel celebrates the unique cultural quirks of both France and the UK, inviting viewers to enjoy everything from a touch of “ooh la la” to traditional British tea time. Stéphane’s affection for Taunton shines through as he shares his favourite spots and highlights of the town.

“For me, Vivary Park is a true gem,” he says. “It’s a peaceful retreat where I film interviews and enjoy calm moments away from the hustle and bustle.” He also recommends the scenic Taunton-to-Bridgwater canal for leisurely walks or bike rides. For those who appreciate nature, the nearby Blackdown and Quantock Hills—with their picturesque landscapes and wild ponies—offer an escape into the countryside.

Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy in Taunton’s diverse restaurant scene. Stéphane particularly praises ‘La Bonne Vie’ for its fusion of French and British cuisine. He also recommends ‘Pink Garlic’ for Indian food, ‘Mei’s’ for Asian buffets, and ‘Somerset Buffet’ if you want a bit of everything. For a laid-back brunch or daytime treat, ‘The Deckhouse’ provides a relaxing atmosphere.

As a National Trust member, Stéphane frequently visits local historic sites such as Dunster Castle and Montacute House, describing the membership as “totally worth it” for access to these fascinating attractions.

Vivary Park’s popularity is echoed by visitors who have left glowing reviews, with Tripadvisor users praising its “beautifully maintained gardens” and “cute park vibes.” Other notable places in and around Taunton include the Museum of Somerset, the Coates English Willow Visitor Centre, Cooper Associates County Ground, Stoke Wood Alpacas, and Bishops Lydeard Mill.

Reflecting on his life in the UK, Stéphane shares, “People are friendly, often smiling and quick with jokes. As a visitor, you’d feel very welcome.” However, he notes that building deeper social connections can sometimes be difficult. “The weather encourages people to stay indoors with family and close friends, which makes it a bit harder for strangers to become part of social groups.”

With its blend of natural beauty, rich history, friendly locals, and vibrant food scene, Taunton clearly offers much to love — a sentiment Stéphane Jouin embraces wholeheartedly.
