After more than four decades of gastronomic distinction, The Angel in Dartmouth, Devon, is closing its doors. Owned by The Holland Group, the restaurant has been a beacon of fine dining and innovation since its founding by culinary trailblazer Joyce Molyneux in the 1970s.
Celebrated as one of the UK’s top dining destinations, The Angel garnered acclaim for its riverside location and exceptional cuisine. In 2023, The Times recognised it as a “place of culinary pilgrimage,” underscoring its lasting impact on the national food scene.
The decision to close, effective July 6, comes as evolving consumer preferences and challenging economic conditions reshape the fine dining landscape. The company reflects on the restaurant’s rich legacy with gratitude, noting how Joyce Molyneux’s visionary leadership inspired generations of chefs.

Executive chef Elly Wentworth, a former MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, shared her pride in the dishes crafted and relationships built during her tenure. She now looks forward to new opportunities in South Devon as The Angel prepares for a series of farewell events.
James Pike, group general manager, expressed the difficulty of the decision but emphasised its necessity given current market realities. The Holland Group remains committed to its diverse portfolio, including the Embankment Bistro, Coastal Trail Café, and Dartmouth Escapes, while exploring new dining concepts for The Angel’s historic premises.
