‘I was an elderly woman and lonely - but one meeting changed all that’

When Effie, a pensioner and former nurse, first met Magdalena in November, neither could have predicted the profound impact their encounter would have. Despite their age difference, their weekly meetings have blossomed into a deeply meaningful friendship that has transformed Effie’s life.

In late 2024, Effie recognized she was grappling with loneliness, a common experience among older adults. Now, she describes Magdalena’s company as a source of “love and laughter” that brightens her week. For Magdalena, their two-hour sessions together are equally rewarding.

“It’s the most rewarding thing to see she’s enjoying herself and looking forward to our meetings,” Magdalena shared.

The pair were introduced by BEfriend, a West London charity dedicated to alleviating loneliness and isolation, especially among the elderly. BEfriend matches volunteers with those in need of companionship, creating connections that enrich both parties' lives.

Effie explained to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “When she walks in, I feel happier. It’s brought me love and laughter, which is so important as you grow older. Sometimes you just feel a bit lonely. I can pick up the phone, but it’s always better to see people in person.”

BEfriend, established in 1994 and operating independently since 2002, has supported over 3,200 people with the help of more than 650 volunteers. Their “Befrienders” offer a simple yet powerful human connection through weekly visits, usually lasting one to two hours. These visits may include chatting over tea, taking leisurely walks, or visiting local cafes.

Magdalena emphasizes that she always lets Effie choose how they spend their time together: “I want Effie to decide what she wants to do. We’re a great match—we both like the same coffees and enjoy going to cafes.”

Though Effie has some family and local friends, she doesn’t always have the opportunity to see them regularly. Thanks to BEfriend, she now has Magdalena, whose gentle nature and thoughtful concern brighten her days. Effie said, “She’s so gentle, always asking if I’m okay. I was a nurse, so I appreciate that kind of care. I told my family she’s brilliant—I couldn’t have asked for anyone better.”

Together, they enjoy a variety of activities, keeping their time fresh and engaging. “Every week we do something different—coffee, a walk—sometimes we don’t just sit down. Magdalena plans nicely and always checks what I want to do,” Effie shared.

Loneliness among older adults is a pressing issue. According to Age UK, over two million people aged 75 and over in England live alone, with more than a million going over a month without speaking to anyone. Social prescribing and community programs like BEfriend play a crucial role in addressing these challenges.

A 2024 report highlights the stigma and lack of awareness that often prevent lonely individuals from seeking help, underscoring the need for innovative, compassionate approaches to connect and support them.

Kevin Derbyshire, Engagement Coordinator at BEfriend, told LDRS, “Long-term loneliness is linked to serious health risks, including heart disease, stroke, depression, and cognitive decline. In areas like Ealing and Hounslow, over 50,000 individuals face loneliness, but BEfriend is working hard to change that by fostering simple human connections that improve wellbeing.”

Effie and Magdalena’s story is a powerful reminder that friendship knows no age and that a small act of kindness can change lives.
