St. George’s Plaice in Llandudno has been widely condemned as the worst fish and chip shop in Britain. Despite its prime seaside location, the shop’s Tripadvisor reviews are overwhelmingly negative, citing poor food quality, high prices, and even reports of food poisoning.
Curious to see whether the harsh criticism was fair, YouTube food critic Gary Hanna decided to visit the establishment himself. Hoping the low 1.6-star rating was either outdated or unduly harsh, he set out to discover if anything had changed.
Gary’s first impressions were somewhat positive: the scenic location was undeniably beautiful, and the shop had thoughtfully installed screens to protect customers from the town’s notorious seagulls. However, the experience swiftly took a nosedive when the staff informed Gary that many popular menu items had already sold out.

Unable to order his preferred choices, Gary settled on a meal of pollock and chips, a sausage, mushy peas, and curry sauce. At first bite, the chips seemed decent enough, giving him fleeting hope that the negative TripAdvisor comments might be exaggerated.
Unfortunately, that hope was short-lived. Gary described the pollock as excessively greasy, with the batter serving as little more than a hollow shell. “It’s lacking any substantial amount of fish," he said, adding that the meager fish inside was mushy and unpleasant.
His £9.95 medium portion of pollock, while larger than expected, certainly didn’t justify the price. The chips cost £3.95; the sausage, a basic industrial-grade product, was an overpriced £4.45; and his sides of mushy peas and curry sauce were £2.25 each. Gary branded the peas as sour and the curry sauce as watery and flavorless.
Gary empathized with the lingering critical reviews, saying: “The effort that’s gone into this is borderline zero.”
He also noted the poor quality of the sausage, which failed to meet expectations despite its steep price tag. “£4.50 for that? You’re having a laugh,” he remarked.
At one point, a seagull swooped in and stole the last of Gary’s sausage—ironically underscoring the establishment’s ongoing battle with the persistent birds.
Determined to address the subpar meal, Gary returned to the shop and politely requested a refund, calling the meal “the worst fish and chips known to humankind.” The staff member, appreciating his calm demeanor, agreed to refund his money and revealed they often deal with customers throwing food back in frustration.
Gary concluded that St. George’s Plaice urgently needs to improve. “This isn’t just about me. I’m sure lots of people come back complaining,” he stated. “It must be tough for the young staff working there. The owners really need to step up.”
