Earlier this year, Weymouth Beach in Dorset was named the UK’s best beach, and as summer reached its peak, I decided to see firsthand why it continues to earn such high praise. Positioned along the stunning Jurassic Coast, Weymouth also ranked 20th among Europe’s best beaches, solidifying its reputation with four consecutive years at the top of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
The beach offers much more than just soft, golden sands. Families can enjoy a variety of attractions such as the iconic Observation Wheel, donkey rides, and lively amusement arcades. Yet, what struck me most upon arrival wasn’t the entertainment options but the immaculate cleanliness of the beach and surrounding seafront.
In an era when plastic pollution has surged—rising nearly 10% last year according to the Marine Conservation Society—and where many UK beaches report an average of 170 litter items per 100 meters of coastline, Weymouth stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship. The beach was exceptionally tidy, a refreshing contrast that clearly enhances its appeal to summer visitors.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with families and friends enjoying the safe, well-maintained environment. Throughout the busy season, RNLI lifeguards vigilantly monitor the waters, ensuring visitor safety. Amid increasing concerns over water quality at UK beaches, often flagged as “Brown Flag Beaches” by the Environment Agency, Weymouth defies this trend. It proudly holds the Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy for providing a clean, well-managed, and safe beach experience.
Though I didn’t take a dip, the inviting light blue water promised a refreshing swim on a hot day. Weymouth Town Council’s Town Clerk Jane Biscombe expressed pride in the award, calling Weymouth Beach a “fantastic resource” for both residents and visitors.
Data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirms there have been no pollution reports at Weymouth this year, with water quality rated as “good” based on sampling from 2021 to 2024.
Beyond the beach, Weymouth’s Esplanade impresses with its spotless condition and charming blend of Georgian architecture. The promenade is dotted with quaint cafes, eateries, and craft shops, making it a perfect place for leisurely strolls while soaking in breathtaking coastal vistas.
Weymouth’s accolades aren’t new. For over two decades, it has consistently been recognised for outstanding management, cleanliness, safety, and visitor information, earning Blue Flag, Seaside, and Quality Coast Awards. The Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide and TripAdvisor also regularly highlight Weymouth among the UK’s premier beach destinations.
In sum, Weymouth Beach offers a blend of natural beauty, excellent facilities, and an unwavering commitment to environmental care that truly made it stand out during my visit.
