I Visited the UK’s Best Beach — and One Thing Stood Out Immediately

Earlier this year, Weymouth Beach on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast was crowned the UK’s best beach—and it’s easy to see why. Ranked 20th among Europe’s finest beaches, Weymouth has held the top spot at the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards for four consecutive years.

Beyond its expansive stretch of golden sand, Weymouth offers a host of family-friendly attractions, from the iconic Observation Wheel and donkey rides to lively amusement arcades. Yet, during my visit in the height of summer, it wasn’t the activities that impressed me most—it was the beach’s exceptional cleanliness.

While many UK beaches grapple with pollution—recent Marine Conservation Society reports show a nearly 10% increase in plastic pollution last year and an average of 170 pieces of rubbish per 100 meters of coastline—Weymouth presents a strikingly different picture. The beach and seafront are meticulously maintained, creating a welcoming atmosphere for families and friends alike.

Safety is another highlight. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during peak seasons, and Weymouth has earned the prestigious Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy, recognizing its well-managed, clean, and safe environment. This achievement stands out amid nationwide concerns over increasing “Brown Flag Beaches,” noted for poor water quality.

The water itself appeared inviting, shimmering a refreshing light blue that many would relish on a hot summer day. Between 2021 and 2024, water quality sampling categorized Weymouth’s sea as “good,” and local authorities report no pollution incidents this year.

The beauty continues beyond the shoreline. Weymouth’s Esplanade is immaculate, lined with charming Georgian buildings, cafes, eateries, and craft shops—ideal for relaxed strolls and taking in stunning seaside views.

As Visit Dorset highlights, Weymouth Beach boasts over two decades of accolades for cleanliness, safety, and management, including Blue Flag and Quality Coast awards. Its consistent recognition by the Marine Conservation Society and TripAdvisor underscores its reputation as one of the UK’s best-loved coastal destinations.

In sum, Weymouth Beach delivers not only picturesque scenery and attractions but also an impressive commitment to cleanliness and sustainability that makes all the difference.
