‘I Feel Incredibly Stupid,’ Says Rescued Beachgoer After 90-Minute Mud Struggle

What should have been a relaxing day at the beach turned into a terrifying ordeal for several visitors at Weston-super-Mare during one of the hottest weekends of the year. With temperatures soaring to 33°C, many people flocked to the shore to cool off, only to find themselves trapped in the thick, treacherous mudflats.

Over the weekend, local emergency services received numerous calls from people stuck in the mud. On Saturday, July 12 alone, the RNLI Weston-super-Mare lifeboat crew conducted six rescues, five of which involved beachgoers caught in the mud. In total, 19 individuals were rescued over the weekend, highlighting the persistent danger posed by the area’s mudflats.

One rescued beachgoer shared their harrowing experience: “We waded through thigh-deep mud for an hour and a half to reach the sea. I had no idea it was so dangerous. When we finally made it to the water, even though I was sinking, I thought the incoming tide would help me cool off and swim. I never considered calling 999. I feel incredibly stupid now, but I’m so grateful to the RNLI. Raising awareness about these dangers is really important.”

The RNLI has issued a strong warning to beach visitors, urging them not to attempt reaching the sea during low tide due to the risk of becoming trapped. A statement on their Facebook page reads: “As hot weather continues, do not be tempted to reach the water at low tide in Weston. If you see someone heading out onto the mudflats, please warn them immediately — you could save a life.”

Avon Fire and Rescue Service also participated in the rescue efforts and echoed concerns about the deceptive conditions. “The beach is popular during warm weather, but the tide comes in very fast, and the mudflats can trap you before you even realize it,” they warned.

Their advice includes:

  • Do not attempt a rescue yourself if you see someone in difficulty; call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

  • If you become stuck in mud or soft sand, spread your weight evenly, avoid moving excessively, and stay calm.

  • Do not let others try to rescue you, as they could also become trapped.

Visitors to Weston-super-Mare are urged to respect these warnings and prioritize safety to prevent future incidents.
