Hutton welcomes new 20mph zone and plans for more

Today marks the start of the construction of a new 20mph zone in Hutton, as part of North Somerset Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety and sustainable travel. This initiative, set to span three days, will be the 28th scheme implemented since 2000, with additional zones recently established in Wrington, Uphill, Nailsea, Clevedon (The Beach/Hill Road area), Weston-super-Mare (Baker Street), Pill, and Easton-in-Gordano.

More schemes are in the pipeline, including those for Kenn, following consultation with residents, and contractors are being organized for a scheme in Yatton.

These 20mph zones align with the council’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 by offering sustainable travel routes, promoting the well-being of residents, and advocating for cycling and walking while reducing car usage.

An October 2023 public consultation on the 20mph scheme, consisting of a drop-in session and an online questionnaire, revealed that 80% of the responses were in favor of its implementation.

Councillor Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for active travel, expressed excitement about the introduction of the 20mph zone in Hutton, highlighting its potential to provide a safer environment for movement within the village.

Councillors Mike Solomon and Terry Porter, ward members for Hutton and Locking, emphasized the scheme’s significance in making Hutton safer for pedestrians and horse riders, while also advocating for its extension into and out of the village.
