Human Remains Found on South West Beaches Confirmed to Be Same Man

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that human remains discovered at two North Devon beaches—Westward Ho! and Appledore—belong to the same man. On Thursday, 22 May, a leg was first reported washed ashore at Westward Ho! Beach, sparking concern among locals and prompting images shared on social media. Later that day, additional remains were found further along the coastline near Appledore.

An ongoing investigation has now clarified that both sets of remains are from the same individual. Police officials announced on Tuesday, 14 October, that the death is not being treated as suspicious. The man’s next of kin have been informed, and authorities are preparing a report for the coroner.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said, “We received notification around 9:30 am on 22 May regarding potential human remains at the end of Westward Ho! Beach in Bideford. Further remains were subsequently found at Appledore the same day. Both were recovered for identification, leading to the conclusion that they belong to one individual. Our officers continue to support the family during this time.”
