Human Remains Discovered in Somerset as Murder Investigation Launched

Human remains were found in the village of Gurney Slade, Somerset, intensifying a search for missing man Craig Hurcombe into a formal murder investigation. The remains were discovered late on Wednesday, January 14, during an extensive police operation.

Craig Hurcombe, 40, was last seen at approximately 6:20 pm on New Year’s Day in the Gurney Slade area. He was reported missing to Wiltshire Police on the morning of January 10. Following the discovery, his family has been informed and is receiving ongoing support from specially trained officers.

The investigation responsibility transferred to Avon and Somerset Police on January 12, who subsequently arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of murder. The suspect remains in police custody as inquiries continue.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any dashcam or doorbell camera footage from areas including Roemead Road, Roemead Lane, Simbriss Road, Pound Lane, Galley Batch Lane, and Golf Links Lane between 6 pm on January 1 and 2 pm on January 2. Additional footage from Roemead Road during the night of December 30 and early December 31 is also requested.

Neighbourhood Policing Chief Inspector Andy Pritchard expressed sympathy for Craig’s family, acknowledging the difficult and painful circumstances. He emphasized ongoing support and urged respect for the privacy of those affected.

The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) is leading the case with assistance from specialist units such as search dogs, drones, forensic experts, and digital investigators. CCTV and house-to-house enquiries are underway to gather further evidence, and appeals have been made to drivers of vehicles seen in the area during key times.

No increased public safety risks have been identified, but police presence has been enhanced locally. The formal identification of the remains and a post-mortem examination are pending.

Avon and Somerset Police have informed their Professional Standards Department due to the nature of the investigation. Updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
