A lorry driver was rescued after his vehicle toppled on a severely flooded Somerset road during Storm Chandra. The incident occurred on Godney Road near Wells, a location frequently impacted by rising waters from the River Brue.
Local resident Dave Gough, a self-proclaimed “flood-chaser,” documented the scene while assisting other stranded motorists. Approaching Godney Bridge, Dave noticed the overturned lorry with its lights still on, raising concerns that the driver might be trapped inside.
Equipped with flood-ready gear, Dave carefully climbed onto the cab, managing to open its heavy door. To his relief, the vehicle was empty—lights and air conditioning were running, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Had the driver remained inside, they would have faced chest-high freezing water.

Dave reflected on the difficulty of navigating floodwaters, empathizing with the driver who likely misjudged the road edge while making farm deliveries. “It’s so easily done, even when you can see the ditches,” he said, recalling a similar rescue he performed last year.
The driver was safely helped out with the assistance of local farmer Michael Churches, who arrived in his tractor. A recovery company is now scheduled to remove the lorry once the floodwaters recede.
Somerset Council has issued a major incident declaration, warning that further flooding remains likely—especially in the Moorland, Saltmoor, and Currymoor areas.
