Churches in Somerset are on high alert after a recent surge in thefts targeting historic religious buildings. Ecclesiastical, a specialized insurer, is issuing a warning to churches to ramp up security measures to deter potential break-ins.
The upscale Grade-I listed Holy Trinity Church in Bradford on Avon fell victim to thefts, with valuable items, including a silver plate and chalices used for communion, stolen. Similarly, St Augustine’s Church in Locking, Weston-Super-Mare, experienced a series of thefts and vandalism, prompting an escalation in police surveillance.
In a recent report by Historic England and the National Police Chief’s Council, concerns were raised regarding the potential rise in theft of heritage materials and cultural objects due to increased commodity prices driven by inflation.

Helen Richards, church operations director at Ecclesiastical Insurance, emphasized the devastating impact of church thefts on the worshippers and volunteers, as well as the irreplaceable loss of heritage. She highlighted the urgency for all churches to reevaluate their security measures in light of the growing threat of break-ins and thefts.
Churches are advised to take the following security steps recommended by Ecclesiastical’s risk management team:
-
Secure Church Premises: Lock doors, windows, and external gates at night. Install security lights, anti-climb paint, intruder alarms, and CCTV systems, remotely monitored by an alarm-receiving center.
-
Utilize Church Facilities: Encourage regular usage of the building for communal and religious activities to reduce vulnerability to attacks.
-
Maintain Security Measures: Keep internal doors locked, store valuables in secure safes, and remove any equipment that could facilitate access to the church when not in use.
-
Conduct Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the church buildings and grounds, promptly reporting any criminal damage to the authorities and insurers.
-
Immediate Repairs: Address any criminal damage to the church promptly to mitigate the risk of further attacks.
In the event of theft, churches should report the incident to the police to support forensic investigations and notify their insurer to process a claim.
Ecclesiastical Insurance urges churches to access further risk management guidance and support on their website to fortify their security measures and protect against potential thefts.
