How to Keep Carrots Fresh for a Month Without the Fridge

Carrots are a staple in kitchens across the UK, used in everything from salads to stews. Despite their popularity, they often spoil faster than expected, leading to unnecessary waste. Waste management experts at Wheeldon Brothers have shared easy and effective techniques to keep carrots fresh for up to a month without refrigeration.

A spokesperson from Wheeldon Brothers explains, “Carrots are among the most commonly wasted vegetables in the UK. But with the right storage methods, they can last for weeks instead of just a few days.”

While the fridge is a common storage choice, carrots can also thrive at room temperature if stored correctly. The experts advise keeping carrots away from heat sources and avoiding washing them before storage, as washing removes their protective skin and accelerates spoilage.

Using a sealed container can help maintain moisture levels and slow down dehydration. It’s important to regularly check your carrots and promptly remove any that are softening or showing signs of decay, since spoilage can spread quickly.

“Maintaining the right moisture balance in a stable environment is key,” the experts say. “Under ideal conditions, carrots can stay fresh for up to a month at room temperature.”

Additionally, if your carrots come with leafy tops, be sure to remove them before storage. The leafy greens act like a wick, drawing moisture out of the carrot and causing it to spoil faster.

If you prefer refrigeration, place carrots in an airtight container or sealed bag in the crisper drawer. Another effective method is to store carrots submerged in a jar of water, changing the water every few days to keep them hydrated. Remember to remove the leafy tops before refrigerating as well.

The Wheeldon Brothers team concludes, “Reducing food waste starts with simple habits. Properly storing your carrots is a small step that can make a big difference in keeping food fresh and minimizing waste.”
