How to Bring Joy This Christmas: Local Libraries Launch Heartwarming Book and Coat Drives

This Christmas, residents of Bath and North East Somerset have a special opportunity to spread warmth and kindness through local library initiatives supporting those who might otherwise face the holidays alone or without gifts.

The libraries are calling on the community to participate in a book donation drive, aimed at gifting new or like-new books to individuals who may not receive presents this year or who feel isolated during the festive period. Organizers emphasize the importance of donating books in excellent condition—free from creases, scribbles, stains, or damage. Fiction and engaging reads are preferred, as they offer comfort and escapism during challenging times.

“We invite you to bring festive cheer by gifting a book to someone who might be feeling lonely or overlooked this season,” said a library representative. “Ask yourself, would I be happy to receive this as a gift? If yes, then it’s perfect to donate.”

Donations can be made at various locations, including Bath Central Library, Moorland Road Community Library, Love Weston Library, Midsomer Norton Library, Keynsham Library, Radstock Library, Saltford Community Library, Timsbury Community Library, and Bath Housing, Welfare and Advice Service. The deadline to contribute is Saturday, November 15.

Alongside the book drive, the library service is also rolling out its annual ‘Gift a Coat’ campaign. This program encourages individuals to donate warm coats they no longer need, helping those vulnerable to the cold find comfort this winter. Coats and winter accessories such as hats and gloves can be dropped off at Bath Central Library, Midsomer Norton Library, Keynsham Library, and Bath Housing, Library and Information Services.

Importantly, anyone in need can also visit these locations to receive winter clothing without any questions asked, ensuring community support is accessible to all. The ‘Gift a Coat’ initiative runs through to Saturday, January 31.

These compassionate projects highlight the power of community spirit in making the festive season brighter and warmer for everyone.
