Houseboats Ordered to Leave Scenic River Avon Stretch in Bath

Houseboats moored along a picturesque section of the River Avon in Bath have been ordered to leave by Bath and North East Somerset Council. The affected area lies opposite Parade Gardens, just downstream from Pulteney Weir—a favored mooring spot for houseboats, some of which are available as holiday lets.

The council has clarified that this section of the river is not designated for navigation and poses safety risks, especially during adverse weather conditions. Deputy Council Leader Sarah Warren highlighted the dangers: “Boats moored in the Pulteney stretch face a significant flooding risk, particularly during severe winter weather. This jeopardizes lives and public safety.”

Concerns also include unsafe mooring practices, such as using benches as gangplanks and securing boats to grab lines, which compromises essential lifesaving equipment. To mitigate these risks, the council is collaborating with boat owners and the Canal & River Trust to facilitate their relocation to safer mooring locations.

Owners have been given a deadline in September to remove their vessels. The council has made clear that legal action will be pursued if boats remain after this date.

This intervention follows last year’s removal of four sunken boats, which had posed hazards on the river. The council successfully recovered costs totaling £55,000 from the owners.

The riverside area is poised for transformation with Bath Rugby’s recently approved permanent stadium at the Recreation Ground. Additionally, the council is exploring the possibility of replacing the aging Pulteney Radial Gate with a small hydroelectric power scheme.

To support affected boat owners, the council is hosting an information session on Wednesday, May 27, with further drop-in sessions scheduled for June and July. These sessions aim to assist boaters in preparing to move their vessels and connect them with necessary local support services.
