Home Bargains to Create Over 100 Jobs with New Frome Store Approval

Home Bargains is set to open a new store in Frome, bringing more than 100 local job opportunities following planning approval by Somerset Council. This development is part of the wider Keyford Meadows site, situated near prominent retailers such as Sainsbury’s and McDonald’s on Sandys Hill Lane.

The journey began in July 2020 when Mendip District Council granted outline planning permission for 235 homes and commercial spaces at the location. Since then, residential construction has advanced, with Curo building 198 homes. Now, Home Bargains, operating under T.J. Morris Ltd., has secured permission to establish its nearly 1,800 square meter store adjacent to Sainsbury’s, with access via Oakley Way.

Despite concerns expressed about increased traffic congestion around the site, especially near the local roundabout, Somerset Council endorsed the project. The area was earmarked for commercial use in the council’s Local Plan Part II, which was updated following a judicial review.

The new Home Bargains store will feature ample parking, including 137 spaces with dedicated accessible parking, parent and child bays, electric vehicle charging points, and ten cycle stands. A future neighboring unit is also planned to accommodate a food retailer.

A spokesperson for Quod, representing Home Bargains, highlighted the retailer’s commitment to providing affordable, quality products during challenging economic times. They noted that the closest Home Bargains is currently in Trowbridge, approximately eight miles away, and that this new store will significantly benefit the local economy by offering diverse employment opportunities.

Local residents and councillors voiced concerns regarding traffic management and safety, particularly the interaction between delivery vehicles and customer traffic. Suggestions included creating dedicated service roads to mitigate risks. Nevertheless, the planning committee approved the store unanimously, demonstrating a strong vote of confidence in the development.

Construction of the Home Bargains store is anticipated to begin shortly after Christmas, with the opening date planned for later in 2026. Additional applications for a food retail outlet to the south and potential care facilities and drive-thru services to the north are also expected in the coming year.
