Wells Cathedral has become the latest filming location for a major Hollywood production. This week, the historic Somerset landmark has been taken over by a film crew shooting the highly anticipated Masters of the Universe movie.
Rumors had been swirling for days, and SomersetLive initially reported on the secretive project, sparking speculation that it involved the beloved 1980s cartoon franchise He-Man. The mystery was confirmed when numerous large vehicles bearing the Universal Studios logo appeared parked on Cathedral Green beside the iconic building. Posters promoting the Masters of the Universe film were also displayed, as noted by the Somerset County Gazette.
While no star sightings have been reported in Wells so far, the film’s IMDb page lists a star-studded cast including Idris Elba, Jared Leto, and Camila Mendes from Riverdale. The movie is slated for release in 2026 and promises to bring the classic story to a new generation.

According to IMDb, the plot follows a young man on Earth who discovers he is the prince of an alien planet. He embarks on a quest to recover a magic sword and return to his home in order to protect his kingdom.
The film draws inspiration from the animated TV series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which aired between 1983 and 1985 and produced 130 episodes.
To accommodate filming, Wells Cathedral was fully closed to the public for three days, from June 4 to June 6, except for religious services and limited access to the café and gift shop.
