An iconic Taunton pub is set to reopen, proudly reclaiming its original name and heritage. Located on Castle Green, the venue will once again be known as The Winchester, a name steeped in local history.
Originally called The Winchester Hotel, the establishment was renamed The Winchester Arms during the 1940s and 1950s. More recently, it operated as Mackenzie’s Bar until it closed permanently on July 13 of this year.
Under new ownership by Amber Taverns, which manages numerous pubs across the country, the historic venue will relaunch as The Winchester. The official reopening is scheduled for Monday, October 13, preceded by an exclusive soft opening on Sunday, October 12.

Announcing the revival on Facebook, The Winchester shared: “We’re almost ready to welcome you to The Winchester – our brand-new pub right here in the heart of Taunton. The doors officially open on Monday, October 13, but before then, we’ll be holding a special soft opening on Sunday, October 12. A select few lucky guests will receive invites to preview the pub.”
The team encouraged locals to follow their social media channels for photos of the preparations and chances to attend the soft opening event. Fans and residents alike are eagerly anticipating stepping back in time to experience The Winchester once again.
