Historic Somerset Railway Launches Dual Train Operations with Steam and Diesel

Railway enthusiasts have every reason to celebrate this weekend as the historic East Somerset Railway unveils a significant upgrade that enables it to run two trains simultaneously for the first time in its history. The line’s latest enhancement offers visitors not only increased services but the unique opportunity to take the controls of a steam locomotive.

The key improvement is a newly completed signalling system at Cranmore station, which allows trains to operate safely on both platforms. This development brings into active use a platform that was originally funded in 2018, enhancing the line’s capacity and flexibility.

This ambitious project was brought to life by dedicated volunteers who, starting in 2022, designed, constructed, and installed the interim signalling technology themselves, showcasing impressive community spirit and technical skill.

To mark this milestone, on Saturday, October 25, the railway will run both a classic steam engine and a heritage diesel multiple unit throughout the day and evening. The event promises a rich experience for visitors, including an exclusive chance to ‘drive’ a steam engine for a fee of £15—a rare opportunity sure to excite railway enthusiasts.

An East Somerset Railway spokesperson remarked, “Thanks to Heritage Lotteries funding from 2018, a new platform was built. From 2022 onwards, our volunteers crafted and installed a signalling system that enables safe operation from both platforms at Cranmore station.”

The special timetable features eight services running from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Adding to the day’s charm, The Station Café will serve food aboard the diesel unit during evening trips, blending heritage rail travel with excellent hospitality.

Tickets for this special event can be purchased online at www.eastsomersetrailway.com or directly from the railway’s Ticket Office.
