Railway enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate this weekend as the historic East Somerset Railway unveils a significant upgrade that allows it to run two trains simultaneously for the first time. This milestone enhancement not only improves operational flexibility but also offers visitors a unique chance to take the controls themselves.
The railway has completed an innovative signalling project that enables services to operate from both platforms at Cranmore station. This development brings into use a platform originally funded in 2018, revitalizing a key part of the station’s infrastructure. The signalling system was designed, built, and installed by dedicated volunteers starting in 2022, showcasing remarkable community effort and expertise.
On Saturday, October 25, visitors can enjoy a full day of service featuring both a classic steam locomotive and a heritage diesel multiple unit. The timetable includes eight scheduled services running from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Evening runs promise a cozy experience with meals available on board the diesel unit courtesy of The Station Café.

Adding to the excitement, the railway is offering visitors the thrilling opportunity to drive a steam engine for just £15—a special experience sure to be in high demand.
An East Somerset Railway spokesperson commented, “Thanks to Heritage Lottery funding in 2018, the new platform was built, and from 2022, our volunteers have developed and implemented a signalling system that allows safe operation from both platforms at Cranmore station.”
